My history with computers

Amstrad (1988)

I specifically remember when an Amstrad computer arrived at my house (I was only 6 years old) and I remember two things:

  1. You could download programmes such as Kingkong, through cassette tapes.
  2. And it could display on the screen previously programmed messages.

When I unplugged the computer, the programmed messages stopped appearing, which really frustrated me after many attempts at trying to solve it (too many films). Anyway, it took me a few years to work out the answer to this problem.

Pentium MMX (1998)

In 1993 I started fiddling with a MS-DOS unit whilst I was on an IT course. Many years later I took another course on programming.

In 1998, my grandad gave me my first ever computer (Pentium MMX 266MHz), and I remember that same year we received a 56K connexion through Uni2.

Back then it was the latest thing to do, online real time chatting (Internet relay chat – IRC), and I started to develop a script for the mIRC client which I called OrioN.

IRCOrioN (2001)

I remember getting really obsessed about that little programme. At school and during maths, history and literacy lessons, I kept drawing the application interface in my notebook and I kept thinking about the functionality of the new versions.

As time went by, that programme ended up becoming a much bigger project, IRCOrioN reached a distinguished position, and it became one of the most used mIRC scripts in Spanish speaking countries. It was very rewarding to see it published in many articles and documents about scripting in the @rroba IT magazine.

Well… it is also true that all this made me fail many subjects at school, but it did help me discover what I really wanted to do many years later.
